Ash Wednesday

my knowledge of the catholic faith does not extend to the practices of lent. apparently it does not for my catholic friends either. i love you all...but after today - this deserves a blog.

C was in a mood to pick on me today and S stuck up for me by saying "let's not be mean to each other today. something important happened to Jesus on this day." she wasn't sure what, but there had to have been something.

now to make fun of my own ignorance for a moment: i had a table of three ladies, one of which had a huge black mark on her forehead. i thought it must be a bruise or an awful birthmark of some sort. then i notice another lady at the table has a smaller, less dark mark on her forehead. definitely bruises. they must have bumped heads and one bruises more easily than the other. i seriously did not clue in until i heard them talking in the kitchen about Ash Wednesday and remembered the ritual of this day.

then i admit to not knowing what the significance of Ash Wednesday is and C says "it's when we rub the ashes from the cross on our foreheads. you know - the cross on which Jesus was burned." right. so i kindly explain that He wasn't burned on a cross, He was crucified - and no it's not the same thing. the explanation of the ashes was quickly revamped to be the ashes of Jesus decomposed body.

i am, if anything, less educated about lent than i was when i woke up this morning. (hope none of you were offended :)

that is super dumb... honestly, if you profess to be something at least know WHY you're being it...(eye-roll)

Hmm, I always thought the ashes were simply an expression of mourning, as the Jews did with "sackcloth and ashes".

They're sad Jesus had to die, so they mourn with ashes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm too tired right now to google it.
